The Rantum harbor (also Rantum marina) is a small recreational boat harbor and former fishing port on the east side of the island of Sylt, near the town of Rantum. The harbor goes dry at low tide and is not exposed to the swell of the North Sea due to its location on the protected eastern side of the island. The Rantum marina is the smallest and youngest of the four ports on Sylt. It was built in 1977 directly on the site of the former Rantum naval aviation base on the south-east corner of the Rantum basin. At the site of today´s harbor there was a pier for air traffic control boats during the time of the sea aviation base. Despite the convenient location not far from the island metropolis of Westerland, the competition from the established ports in List and especially Hörnum was so strong that further tourist expansion of the port of Rantum was refrained from. In addition, this port is dependent on the tide and regular dredging of the shipping channel requires large investments.
