* This marine single side band information exchange is intended to assist cruisers in the proper use of their radio.
* Data has been accumulated from many sources and personal experiences & is not intended to be all-inclusive.
* Furthermore it is correct only to the best of our knowledge.
DEFINITIONS & OPERATION.
* Marine Single Side Operation is controlled by the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) like the FCC in the United States.
* Unlike amateur radio or hams, marine SSB frequencies are channelized.
* All assigned frequencies are in increments of 3 Khz, i.e. 8101, 8104,
8107.
* Marine SSB channels for voice are all upper side band (USB) or J3E mode, amateur frequencies use USB or LSB.
* Simplex operation has transmit & receive frequencies the same.
* Duplex operation has transmit & receive frequencies different.
* Distress & calling channels in all bands should be avoided as working channels.
* Adjacent channel bleeding.
o Symptoms are a loud distorted signal from a nearby station.
o Most radios transmit at 150 watts & will bleed over to the next
adjacent channels.
o Avoid using channels just above & below another channel in use, not
simply hailing channels.
o Especially avoid just above & below official or unofficial hailing channels.
* Tuning.
o Symptoms are a constant tone, whistle or blowing into the microphone.
o Especially long duration for manual tuning.
o All other stations are blocked from receiving during the tuning
* Courtesies.
o As with VHF channel 16, avoid conversations on official or unofficial hailing channels.
o Call "break" to hail another station during a net in progress.
